Press Release - Councilmember Mai Vang Surges in Latest Count, Moves Into First in Sacramento County
Grassroots campaign closes to within two points districtwide as thousands of ballots remain to be counted
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - June 5, 2026
SACRAMENTO, CA. — Councilmember Mai Vang's campaign for California's 7th Congressional District surged with the latest ballot drop, moving into first place in Sacramento County and closing to within two points districtwide — with thousands of votes still left to count.
The result marks a dramatic development in a race where Vang was outspent nearly 3-to-1. The 21-year incumbent spent $1.4 million of her own money while asking her super PAC allies to boost a Republican candidate in the closing weeks. Vang's campaign, by contrast, was powered by a grassroots movement of volunteers, working families, and voters ready for a new generation of leadership who knocked doors and made calls across the district.
"This is what people power looks like," Councilmember Vang said. "We were outspent three to one — and we're still standing, because of the people. Every door we knocked, every conversation we had, every neighbor who wanted a new generation of leadership — it's showing up in these numbers. We're not done. There are thousands of votes still to count, and we're going to honor every single one of them. But tonight, I am filled with gratitude and more fired up than ever."
The campaign said it would keep its focus on the ongoing count while continuing to organize, and thanked the volunteers and supporters who fueled the surge.
